University Secretariat, Njala Campus – 9th June 2025— The Dean of the School of Agriculture and Food Sciences, Professor Roland Suluku, has applauded the university administration for what he described as transformative improvements in internet connectivity and electricity supply to his school. In an interview, Professor Suluku praised the development as a major boost to teaching, research, and student life.
According to Professor Roland Suluku, the installation of a Starlink internet device, facilitated by the university’s ICT Director Dr. Thomas Philip Songu, has provided the school with 24-hour internet access, even during campus-wide power outages. The system, powered by solar panels, has made it possible for students and staff to stay connected around the clock. “Even if the university light is off, we still have internet,” Suluku noted. “Students can now come around and browse without fear—unlike before when they had to go to the library at night and risk encounters with snakes.”
Professor Suluku credited the Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Alhaji Professor Bashiru Mohamed Koroma for his leadership in facilitating the installation, describing the move as a “relief” for students and staff alike. He revealed that plans are underway to extend the internet coverage across the entire school, including staff quarters. “We are looking into expanding the internet’s range so everyone here—students and lecturers—can benefit fully,” he added.
The Dean also highlighted the provision of a gallon of diesel per day by the university administration, which powers their generator from noon to 5 p.m., after the main university grid shuts down. “In the past, when the grid went off, everyone went home,” he said. “Now, we have light until 5 or 6 p.m., and lecturers can stay and work longer.”
Concluding his remarks, Professor Suluku praised the administration for making the School of Agriculture the only school on campus with extended power after hours. He described the developments as “game-changing” and called them a model for other schools at the university to follow.
