The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development has on Tuesday 19th March 2024 suspended the operations of twenty five (25) Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) with immediate effect in Sierra Leone for non compliance.
According to a press release issued and signed by the Development Secretary, these NGOs are found to be non-compliant with the established requirements to operate as NGOs nationwide.
“The government has realized that certain NGOs are operating without meeting the requisite standards outlined by the NGO Policy Framework. Key among them is to have a certified office in the country,” the release states, adding that
“It is imperative that NGO adhere to the prescribed requirements to fulfil their missions effectively while ensuring that resources are judiciously used.The release also states that the Ministry has issued the directives to the affected NGOs to ceased operations with immediate effect.
The release states that their action is not to impede their invaluable contributions in the various communities but a proactive step towards enhancing the integrity of the NGO sector.
The affected NGOs includes Alpha Foundation SL, Association for the wellbeing of Rural Communities and Rural Development, Centre for Gender, Governance and Development and Club Health Actors SL,
Action for Integrated Development and Advocacy Initiative for Development Sierra Leone, among others.
