The Annual sports meet of Milton Margai Technical University was held on Thursday 11th April and the finale on Saturday 13th April 2024, with great passion and enthusiasm at the University Athletics Field, Goderich Campus.
The Athletic Meet is one of the major sports events which is held every year. It provides students with an opportunity to showcase their remarkable talents and to cultivate team spirit.
The Vice Chancellor and Principal of the university Prof. Dr. Philip John Kanu during the event visited all the Halls, he admonished them to behave responsibly and maintain peace.
The students were grouped into four Halls: Juba-Blue, Adonkia-Yellow, Lakka-Red, and Lumley-Green. They entered into the occasion determined with oath-taking by participants and officials which was administered by the chairperson Dr Alpha Bassie Mansaray.
The winner for this year’s event was Lumley Hall-Green with a total point of 285, runners, up Lakka-Red with 275 points, Adonkia-Yellow 3rd with 251 points, and Juba-Blue came 4th with a point of 211. The winners of track events were awarded certificates and trophies.
The Distinguished Grand Chief Patronage for this year’s occasion, Dr Vitor E. A Kabia, the chancellor of the University in his statement welcomed everyone, noting that the sports event is a tradition of the university and they want to maintain it, he exhorted all to take part and compete peacefully and achieve the goal, he also encouraged everyone to continue to support the PE Department, to hold on to a healthy body and a healthy mind, adding that; in as much as the institution is in interested in the development of the mind they are also interested in the development of the body, he wished everyone success and declared the sports event for 2023/2024 open.
Many events were conducted, including 100mtrs, 200mtrs, 400mtrs, 800mtrs, 1500mtrs race, long jump, High jump, discus throw, Shot put, Javelin throw, 4×100 mtrs relay as well as 4×100 mtrs mixed relay, tug of peace and many more.
All the students and staff took part in the events with deep determination and interest, the air was filled with cheering and encouragement for the participants from their various supporters.
The Head of the Department, Mr. Joseph Nyande, in his statement, welcomed the invitees, he thanked the university for the resounding support pleaded with the participants to uphold the spirit of sportsmanship, and admonished the officiating team to maintain professionalism.
There were dignitaries present at the event from both home and abroad who came to grace the occasion, alumni of the institution also took part in 100 m.
Earlier, the Olympic flame (torch) which symbolizes the light of spirit, peace, knowledge, and life was held by the Ag DCV of the university Alhaji Dr Mohamed Alie Jalloh, and was lit by the Ag. Registrar of the University.
The Ag. Deputy Vice-Chancellor before declaring the winner, addressed the gathering, thanked everyone for celebrating with them, and extended gratitude to the Physical Education Department for such a brilliant preparation, he further admonished participants for maintaining the spirit of sportsmanship emphasizing the prominence of sports in life and how as an institution they have tried to balance it with education, he added that no matter the outcome of the result it was Milton Margai that won, and thanked everyone for retaining peace throughout the event.
