In a significant move signalling a shift in the leadership structure of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC), the National Secretary General, Lansana Dumbuya Esq., formally requested Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara to resign or better still to leave his position as National Leader, effective immediately. The request, outlined in a letter dated November 1, 2024, cites the party’s constitutional provisions, particularly Section 47(a) (iv), which mandates leaders to step down six months after failing to secure the presidency in an election.
Dr. Kamara, who ran as the party’s presidential candidate in both the 2018 and 2023 elections, had previously agreed during a December 2023 meeting to honour the party’s constitutional requirements by relinquishing his leadership role. His involvement will remain crucial, as he has been tasked with overseeing the completion of the Tripartite Committee’s work, which is now finalized.
In his correspondence, Dumbuya expressed the party’s profound gratitude for Dr. Kamara’s dedication and contributions, emphasizing his pivotal role in the APC’s development and strategic direction. The National Secretary General encouraged him to maintain a strong presence within the party’s future initiatives, following the traditions of past leaders who have continued to play supportive roles.
The letter also highlighted Dr. Kamara’s public statements, in which he expressed his commitment to adhering to the APC Constitution and promoting party unity. Following the completion of the Tripartite Committee’s report and subsequent steps to implement the Agreement for National Unity, the APC has requested that Dr. Kamara return the National Leader’s office keys within a week. Arrangements will be made to assist him in retrieving personal items from the office.
This shift in leadership marks a crucial step for the APC as it emphasizes adherence to its constitutional framework and signals a desire for stronger unity and cooperation within the party. The leadership transition is expected to foster a renewed focus on the APC’s vision and goals as it moves forward. The party remains hopeful for Dr. Kamara’s continued support in its endeavours.
