After serving as a military leader during the 1990s, he pursued higher education, earning a master’s degree in international affairs from American University in Washington, D.C. In 2018, he was elected as the 5th President of Sierra Leone, succeeding Ernest Bai Koroma. His campaign focused on education, anti-corruption, and women’s empowerment.
Leadership and Governance: Establishing a Reform Agenda
Upon assuming office, President Bio prioritized institutional reforms and good governance. He appointed Sierra Leone’s first female Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, advocating for gender equality in leadership . In 2021, he fulfilled a significant pledge by abolishing the death penalty, making Sierra Leone the 23rd African country to do so.
Economic Development: Stabilizing the Economy
President Bio’s administration focused on economic stabilization and growth. Under his leadership, inflation decreased by 18% over eight months in 2024, and the exchange rate remained stable . In August 2024, during the Bank of Sierra Leone’s 60th anniversary, he highlighted the nation’s progress in reducing inflation and maintaining a stable exchange rate.
Infrastructure and Development: Strategic Projects
A landmark project during President Bio’s tenure is the Lungi Bridge, a proposed 7-kilometer bridge connecting Freetown to Lungi, where the international airport is located. Announced in 2021, the project aims to reduce travel time between the airport and the capital, with construction expected to commence by the end of 2024.
Social Justice and Gender Equality: Advancing Women’s Rights
President Bio’s administration has been committed to advancing women’s rights. In January 2023, he signed a landmark bill into law requiring that women constitute 30% of the workforce and government positions, along with 14 weeks of paid maternity leave. The legislation also ensures equal access to credit and financial services for women, with penalties for gender discrimination In July 2024, he signed a law outlawing child marriage, imposing severe penalties for offenders.
Anti-Corruption Efforts: Strengthening Institutions
President Bio has demonstrated a strong commitment to combating corruption. In June 2023, he commissioned the Anti-Corruption Commission’s new headquarters, ‘Integrity House’, emphasizing the government’s dedication to accountable leadership.
Public Information and Internal Affairs: Enhancing Governance
Under President Bio’s leadership, the Ministry of Information and Communications has worked to improve transparency and public access to government information. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has focused on enhancing national security and public safety. Additionally, the Protocol Department has played a crucial role in facilitating diplomatic relations and state functions.

President Bio is married to Fatima Bio, a prominent advocate for women’s rights and education. Together, they have championed initiatives such as the ‘Hands Off Our Girls’ campaign against child marriage and the promotion of girls’ education. Their partnership reflects a shared commitment to social justice and national development.
