As the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) intensifies preparations for its highly anticipated national convention later this year, one name continues to gather momentum across party ranks and grassroots circles — Jimmy Batilo Songa. The former SLPP UK/Ireland Chairman and one-time National Organising Secretary is increasingly viewed as the likely successor to the National Chairman position, with widespread support building across the country.
Recognised as a political heavyweight with a unifying presence, Songa is being praised for his unwavering commitment to the party, grassroots accessibility, and ability to transcend internal divisions. His longstanding loyalty to the SLPP, both at home and in the diaspora, has positioned him as a figure of stability and progress within the party.
In interviews conducted with party loyalists across several regions, a common sentiment emerged — Songa is the kind of leader SLPP needs at this crucial juncture. “Jimmy is a good man — someone who never looks at camps. He helps anyone in need within the party,” said Mariatu K., a veteran party member from Kambia District.
A party member in Kenema echoed similar admiration: “He knows the party and the people. That is why so many of us are backing him. His leadership is not based on favouritism, but on unity and results.”
This groundswell of support is rooted in Songa’s political track record. As a former National Organising Secretary, he helped coordinate successful party mobilisations and built strong networks across all districts. His time as SLPP UK/Ireland Chairman also earned him recognition as a bridge-builder between the party’s diaspora and its domestic leadership.
Meanwhile, Songa’s main opponent, Engineer Amara Kanneh, faces an uphill battle. While respected for his technical acumen and contributions to infrastructural projects, Kanneh is perceived by many as lacking the political charisma and grassroots appeal necessary for the demanding role of National Chairman.
“Kanneh may be a brilliant engineer, but political leadership at this level requires visibility, mass appeal, and emotional intelligence — qualities Batilo Songa naturally brings to the table,” said a senior SLPP insider, who preferred to remain anonymous. “This is not a technocratic role. It’s about energising the base, navigating complex internal dynamics, and representing the party’s face nationally and internationally.”
Beyond internal party politics, many believe that electing Songa would offer strategic advantages ahead of the 2028 general elections. Supporters argue that his leadership would bring much-needed cohesion, enhance operational readiness, and boost the SLPP’s appeal among undecided voters.
“With Batilo as Chairman, the SLPP will be more organised, united, and ready to face any opposition challenge,” said another enthusiastic supporter in Makeni. “He is someone who listens, builds consensus, and gets things done.”
As SLPP’s national convention draws closer, the spotlight intensifies on the contest for National Chairman. While no official endorsements have been made, it is clear that Songa’s name carries considerable weight within the party — not just for his experience, but for the hope and energy he inspires among members.
Whether in urban centres or rural heartlands, Jimmy Batilo Songa is increasingly viewed not only as the frontrunner but also as the candidate capable of steering the SLPP towards a more united and inclusive future.
For now, all eyes remain fixed on the convention. But among the rank-and-file, the verdict seems to be forming: Batilo Songa may very well be the leader the SLPP needs for the political road ahead.
