The ruling Unity Party has opened the door to a potential political alliance with the newly-formed Citizens Movement for Change (CMC), as preparations intensify ahead of the 2029 general elections.
Speaking on State Radio on Monday, Unity Party Chairman Rev. Luther Tarpeh hinted at broader political collaboration, stating that the party is actively working to strengthen its coalition base.
“We’re going to continue ties with our alliances ~ even the CMC might join us,” Rev. Tarpeh said. “We’re regime collaborators, and we will have more parties joining us.”
CMC, a newly launched political party, has been gaining public attention in recent weeks, although its political direction remains under observation.
In the same interview, Rev. Tarpeh addressed speculation regarding Vice President Jeremiah Koung’s political affiliation. Koung, who originally hailed from the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR), has faced questions about his continued association with his former party.
“Yes, VP Koung came from the Movement for Development and Reconstruction,” Tarpeh acknowledged, “but as Vice Standard Bearer of our party, the Unity Party, he is definitely a member of the party.”
Chairman Tarpeh also praised President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, the Unity Party’s Standard Bearer, for his leadership in the face of ongoing national challenges. He credited the administration for gradually initiating change despite economic and social hardships, and promised that Liberians can expect faster progress in the months ahead.
The Unity Party continues to position itself as a central force in Liberia’s political landscape, with its leadership emphasizing unity, collaboration, and continuity as the nation moves toward another critical election cycle.
