Police in Port Loko District have announced the interception of a large quantity of suspected illegal drugs during an operation at the Marforkie Checkpoint. The seizure occurred on Tuesday, December 23, after officers discovered the items concealed in a Toyota vehicle with registration number AZG 503.
According to a police statement, the intercepted consignment included 239 packets of Tramadol and six compressed parcels of cannabis sativa. Both substances are considered controlled drugs under Sierra Leonean law, with Tramadol commonly associated with substance abuse cases among youths and cannabis contributing to illegal drug circulation across the country.
Police said the driver of the vehicle managed to escape during the operation and is currently on the run. Efforts are underway to trace and apprehend him, as authorities continue to gather more evidence surrounding the incident. The vehicle and all exhibits are now in police custody pending further investigation.
Security personnel have intensified operations ahead of the festive season, noting that criminal activities often increase during this time. According to the police, the Marforkie interception forms part of a broader security strategy targeting drug trafficking, armed robbery, and other crimes that may threaten peace and public safety.
The operation is being overseen by the Port Loko District Division, under the leadership of Local Unit Commander CSP Alphonso A. Fambuleh. Police officials praised the vigilance and swift action of officers at the checkpoint, adding that similar joint operations are expected to continue in other high-risk zones within the district and beyond.
In recent years, Sierra Leone has seen growing concern over the circulation of illegal drugs, particularly among young people. Tramadol misuse has been highlighted by authorities and civil society groups as a rising public health issue, often linked to addiction, school dropout, violence, and behavioral disorders.
