The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has strongly condemned the alleged assault of media trainer and legal practitioner Paul Kamara Esq. by officers of the Sierra Leone Police, calling for an immediate and impartial investigation into the incident.
According to a statement issued by SLAJ on 5th April 2026, the alleged incident occurred on the evening of April 4 at the Adonkia Police Station in the Western Rural District. Kamara had reportedly visited the station in connection with an ongoing investigation into the death of his colleague, Augustine Sensie Bangura.
SLAJ said it received an account from Kamara detailing what he described as a troubling encounter with police officers at the station. He alleged that he was physically assaulted, forcibly restrained, dragged, and pepper sprayed during an interaction with officers on the premises. The association noted that, if proven, such actions raise serious concerns about the use of force, professional conduct, and respect for citizens’ rights and dignity.
While acknowledging that it has not yet obtained an official response from the Sierra Leone Police, SLAJ emphasized that the gravity of the allegations requires urgent attention. The association urged the leadership of the police to launch a thorough and transparent investigation without delay.
“SLAJ considers the allegations sufficiently grave to warrant immediate action,” the statement said, adding that any officers found culpable should be held fully accountable in line with the law.
The association also called for measures to ensure the safety and protection of Kamara and any potential witnesses connected to the incident. It further urged oversight bodies, including the Independent Police Complaints Board, to closely monitor the process to guarantee fairness and transparency.
SLAJ stressed that professionalism, accountability, and respect for the rule of law must remain central to policing in a democratic society. It warned that incidents of alleged abuse, if left unaddressed, could undermine public trust in law enforcement institutions.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to following developments surrounding the matter and expressed readiness to support efforts aimed at securing justice.
The alleged assault has already sparked concern among members of the media and civil society, with many calling for clarity and accountability. Observers say the outcome of any investigation will be critical in shaping public confidence in the handling of complaints against law enforcement officers.
As of press time, the Sierra Leone Police had not issued an official statement responding to the allegations.
The case continues to draw attention amid broader discussions about police conduct and citizens’ rights in Sierra Leone
