ActionAid Sierra Leone (AASL) has officially announced the reappointment of its Executive Director, Foday-Bassie Swaray, for a new five-year term. This renewed mandate comes as the organization prepares to roll out its ambitious five-year strategic plan titled “Transformative Action for Inclusive, Resilient and Sustainable Communities.”

Widely recognized for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to social justice, Swaray has played a pivotal role in positioning AASL as a leading force for positive change in Sierra Leone. Over the past five years, he has championed initiatives that have promoted climate action, gender equality, and the fight against sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), while also tackling poverty and inequality in some of the country’s most vulnerable communities.

Under Swaray’s stewardship, AASL has seen significant progress in strengthening community resilience and driving policy reforms that favor marginalized populations. His results-driven approach and ability to mobilize diverse stakeholders—including government agencies, civil society, and international partners—have contributed to lasting and impactful change on the ground.

“Foday’s leadership has transformed AASL’s approach to advocacy and development,” said one senior staff member. “His reappointment marks not only continuity but a renewed energy as we embark on a bold strategy to further deepen our impact.”

The new strategy will focus on inclusive and sustainable development, with an emphasis on community-led solutions that build resilience in the face of ongoing social, economic, and environmental challenges. The plan reflects AASL’s continued commitment to equity, justice, and sustainability, aligning with national priorities and global frameworks such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Key components of the strategy include:

Expanding climate resilience programs across rural and urban communities

Strengthening gender-based advocacy and response systems

Enhancing livelihood initiatives for youth and women

Supporting policy reforms for inclusive governance

Building strategic partnerships for sustainable development

Swaray’s leadership will be instrumental in the successful execution of the strategy. His extensive experience and passion for empowering communities have earned him respect among peers and partners alike.

“I am honored and humbled by the opportunity to continue serving as Executive Director,” Swaray said in a brief statement following the announcement. “This reappointment is a testament to the collective efforts of our team, partners, and the communities we serve. Together, we will continue to work toward a more just, inclusive, and sustainable Sierra Leone.”

AASL also highlighted Swaray’s achievements in recent years, including the scaling of climate-smart agriculture initiatives, launching of SGBV prevention campaigns in high-risk districts, and his advocacy work that contributed to key national policies on gender and environmental protection.

As AASL moves into the next phase, confidence in Swaray’s leadership remains high. His dedication to systemic change and inclusive growth sets a strong foundation for the organization’s future work.

With a renewed vision and committed leadership, AASL is poised to make even greater strides in shaping a Sierra Leone where all communities can thrive.
