Abortion is recognized as an emotive, sensitive and even divisive issue all around the world. The case is no different here in Sierra Leone. In Sierra Leone church are at the forefront of campaign against abortion bill.
A draft bill meant to legalize abortion in Sierra Leone has become a very contentious issue that is debated in certain groups around the country. One of those, among others, who have condemned the passage of the bill in order for it to become law, is the President of Pentecostal Fellowship of Sierra Leone, Bishop Akintoya Sam Jolly had condemned the act of passing abortions Bill in Parliament by Parliamentarians, saying that the bill is devilish act for killing innocent babies during early stages of the formation.
Abortion is currently illegal in Sierra Leone under any circumstance and the government keeps no statistics on abortion. However, President Bio has seemingly given his backing to legalize the abortion bill, when he stated recently at the 10th Africa conference on sexual health and rights. “My government has unanimously approved a safe motherhood bill that will include a range of critical provisions to ensure the health and dignity of all girls and women of reproductive age in this country.”
Sam jolly made this condemnation while engaging different Pastors across Sierra Leone to discuss different issues include abortion, religious violence, and other key important issues that infecting the country. He made this statement at the Zion Praise Church, Hill station in Freetown, with a theme United against Adversity.
He said legalize abortion in Sierra Leone is wrong devilish act and Pentecostal Fellowship of Sierra Leone strongly condemn the act. He stated that the drafted abortion bill previously backfires and year ago after Parliamentarian attempted to pass it. “Passing such bill the Parliamentarians need to know the infect courses because the country lacks the medical facilities.” Bishop Akintoya Sam Jolly.
He stated that the Pentecostal Fellowship of Sierra Leone is strongly condemn the frontline to object the Bill, adding that the bill is apparently meant to legalize abortion in Sierra Leone and has become an issue that is widely debated and contended by different groups around the country.
“He said such a bill is undermining both Christian and Muslim values and has the potential to lay a very bad moral foundation in the country. He said God from the beginning is against murder of any kind.” Bishop Akintayo Sam Jolly noted.
He called on other Religious Body to condemn against the proposed abortion bill, as he considers it an act of evil to undo the wonders of God’s work and therefore must be discouraged in order to avoid the wrath of God upon the nation.
“The right to life of the unborn child is inherent to child and a based for all human rights,” Bishop Sam Jolly said. In his statement, the Ret. Gynaecologist in Sierra Leone Dr. Christian Bell stated that the country lack medical facilities of aborting babies.
