As the world marked World NGO Day, ActionAid joined the global community in celebrating the vital role of civil society in transforming lives and strengthening communities, while reaffirming its long standing commitment to justice, solidarity, and community driven development.

In a statement to commemorate the day, ActionAid highlighted its continued work alongside women, young people, and marginalized groups to promote rights, amplify community voices, and deliver sustainable solutions that ensure no one is left behind. The organization noted that its approach remains firmly rooted in empowering communities to lead change and shape their own development priorities.

This year’s celebration placed special emphasis on ActionAid’s work in child protection in Sierra Leone. Through sustained community engagement, advocacy initiatives, capacity strengthening, and direct support services, the organization said it has contributed significantly to creating safer environments for children across the country.

According to ActionAid, its child protection interventions focus on preventing abuse, neglect, and exploitation while promoting children’s rights and wellbeing. The organization has worked closely with communities to strengthen referral pathways, improve coordination among service providers, and raise awareness on child rights and safeguarding responsibilities.

“These efforts have helped ensure that children are better protected and supported to grow in dignity and hope,” the organization said, adding that community ownership remains central to the success of its programs.

Earlier this week, ActionAid’s work in advancing child protection received national recognition from its partner, UNICEF Sierra Leone. The organization was presented with an award in acknowledgment of its contribution to strengthening child protection systems and improving outcomes for vulnerable children.

ActionAid described the recognition as a significant milestone, noting that it reflects the collective effort of communities, partners, and staff working tirelessly to safeguard children’s rights. The organization emphasized that the award also highlights the resilience and determination of the communities it serves, who continue to play an active role in protecting children.

Speaking on the importance of World NGO Day, ActionAid stressed that civil society organizations remain critical partners in national development, particularly in reaching the most vulnerable and addressing deep rooted inequalities. The organization called for continued collaboration between government institutions, development partners, and civil society to sustain progress in child protection and social justice.

As the world observes World NGO Day 2026, ActionAid reaffirmed its commitment to building a future where every child is protected, every voice is heard, and every community has the power to shape its own development. The organization pledged to continue working in partnership with communities and stakeholders to strengthen systems that promote safety, equality, and opportunity for all children in Sierra Leone.
