Africell Sierra Leone received high praise for its commitment to community radio during the 20th anniversary celebration of MODCAR 94.9 FM on February 28, 2025. Alhaji Manika Kamara, Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), expressed his gratitude as he accepted a Certificate of Recognition from the people of Moyamba and MODCAR for his “unwavering dedication, outstanding performance, and valuable contributions to Moyamba District.”
The ceremony, held on the eve of Ramadan, featured Kamara as the Keynote Speaker, addressing the theme “Community Ownership of the Radio Be Visible.” During his address, he highlighted the significant role that community radio plays in empowering local voices and ensuring access to vital information.
Reflecting on past challenges, Kamara recalled an engagement in Moyamba organized by the Independent Radio Network (IRN) in collaboration with SLAJ, where he learned about the electricity issues plaguing MODCAR Radio. The station had been struggling to remain operational, prompting Kamara to take action.
“Recognizing the importance of community radio, I reached out to Africell Sierra Leone through Abdul Karim Sesay, a dedicated professional who assured me that Africell would intervene,” Kamara stated. “A few weeks later, I received a call from the station manager with the good news: MODCAR is now enjoying a 24-hour electricity supply.”
Kamara expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Africell for their swift response to the community’s needs. “This recognition is truly humbling. It was a privilege to play a small role in ensuring that the people of Moyamba have consistent access to information through their community radio.”
He commended the management and staff of MODCAR Radio for their vital work in informing and empowering the community. “Your dedication is inspiring, and I look forward to continued collaboration in strengthening media access across Sierra Leone,” he added.
As MODCAR 94.9 FM celebrates its 20th anniversary, the partnership with Africell underscores the importance of corporate responsibility in supporting local media initiatives. “Thank you once again for this thoughtful recognition,” Kamara said. “It is a reminder of the impact we can make when we work together. Long live Press Freedom.”
