The country’s main opposition party, The All People’s Congress (APC), has taken a significant step in fostering unity and strengthening its political foundation with a recent high-profile visit to former President Ernest Bai Koroma.
The delegation, led by the National Chairman Alhaji Hon. Minkailu Mansaray, arrived safely on Monday 10th February 2025 in Abuja, Nigeria. The visit has sparked discussions among political analysts and party supporters, many of whom see it as a pivotal moment for the APC as they gear up for the 2028 elections.
Many say it’s a timely and strategic visit, and it could help the progress of the party. At a time when Sierra Leone faces economic and political challenges, the opposition plays a critical role in shaping the nation’s future. This visit by the APC executive to former President Koroma is widely perceived as a crucial step in solidifying internal party cohesion and reinforcing the party’s readiness to contest for power in the next general elections.
For many APC supporters, the visit is not just a courtesy call; it represents a strategic move to unify party leadership and reconnect with a figure who played a significant role in the party’s successes in the past. Koroma remains an influential figure within the APC; and his insights and guidance are seen as invaluable as the party navigates the political landscape leading up to 2028.
At a time Sierra Leoneans are looking to the opposition for hope and direction, the APC needs to present itself as a strong and unified force. Political observers believe that the meeting with Koroma serves as a morale booster for party members and supporters, signalling that the APC is consolidating its leadership in preparation for governance.
Party loyalists like Ibrahim Mansaray, a grassroots supporter, expressed optimism about the visit, stating, “We need unity now more than ever. The meeting with President Koroma is a sign that our leaders are willing to work together to rebuild the party and strategize for 2028.”
Similarly, Fatmata Kamara, a long-time APC supporter, emphasized the importance of strong leadership in opposition politics. “We cannot afford to be divided. This visit gives me confidence that the APC is working towards a common goal; and that goal is winning the next elections.
In addition, Despite stepping down from active leadership, former President Koroma continues to wield considerable influence within the APC. His tenure as leader and Head of State saw the party rise to prominence; and many within the APC still regard his leadership as a model for success. His experience, connections, and political acumen remain vital assets to the party.
Political analyst Mohamed Bangura noted, “This visit is a calculated move by the APC executive. Koroma’s experience in governance and politics can offer strategic insights as the party plans its return to power. His endorsement of the current leadership will go a long way in solidifying trust and unity within the party.”
Also, while the visit to Abuja is a step in the right direction, the APC still has significant work ahead in re-establishing itself as a formidable political force. The road to 2028 requires more than just symbolic visits; it demands active engagement with the people of Sierra Leone, policy development, and a clear vision for the country’s future.
Many Sierra Leoneans are facing economic hardships, and the opposition has a duty to present viable solutions to such pressing issues. The APC must work towards reconnecting with the electorate, addressing concerns, and demonstrating that they have a concrete plan for governance.
The visit to Koroma may be seen as a foundation for a stronger APC, but it is only the beginning. Moving forward, the party will need to continue fostering internal unity, engaging with citizens, and proving that they are ready to lead Sierra Leone into a new era of development and stability.
The APC executive’s visit to former President Koroma is a significant political event that highlights the importance of unity and strategic planning in opposition politics. As the party gears up for the 2028 elections, the meeting could serve as a turning point in strengthening its leadership and reconnecting with the grassroots. Sierra Leoneans, especially APC supporters, will be watching closely to see how this renewed sense of solidarity translates into concrete actions that will define the party’s future.
With the right strategies, internal cohesion, and engagement with the populace, the APC has the potential to mount a formidable challenge in the next election cycle.
Whether this visit will be the catalyst for the party’s resurgence remains to be seen, but for now, it has certainly reignited hope among its supporters.
