It’s not a secret that the All People’s Congress (APC) and its supporters have been wishing for a re-run. But, it’s high time they stopped wishful thinking and focus on 2028. The painful memories of the controversial 2023 elections linger; and dwelling on the past will not pave the path to State House in 2028.
The All People’s Congress (APC) must now focus on rebuilding, strategizing, and mobilizing to reclaim power and restore the dignity of the people of Sierra Leone.
One of the ways they party could claim victory is: Rebuilding Internal Unity and structure the party very well. The party must address the internal divisions and factionalism that have plagued its ranks. There must be reconciliation between party leaders, grassroots members, and influential stakeholders. Holding inclusive meetings, creating dialogue platforms, and promoting transparency in decision-making will help heal old wounds and foster unity.
Additionally, strengthening the party’s structure at all levels—from ward committees to national executives is vital. Establishing vibrant youth and women’s wings will also energize the party and ensure inclusivity.
Also, Strategic Voter Engagement and Grassroots Mobilization will be key. The battle for 2028 will be won in the trenches. APC must prioritize grassroots mobilization by connecting with communities and understanding their needs, meaning empowering local party leaders and foot soldiers to engage citizens and address their concerns.
Conducting voter education campaigns, especially in rural areas, will help combat voter apathy and misinformation. The party should also establish a robust voter registration monitoring system to ensure that supporters are properly registered and can cast their votes without intimidation.
In addition, Building a Compelling Policy Agenda. It’s not a secret that Sierra Leoneans are suffering from economic hardship, unemployment, and poor governance under the current administration. APC must offer a clear and compelling policy agenda that addresses such issues.
Focusing on job creation, infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and youth empowerment will resonate with the electorate. Developing practical solutions to reduce poverty and combat corruption will further strengthen the party’s credibility.
Also, Strengthening the Communication Strategy within the party. In the age of social media and digital communication, APC must adopt a robust and effective communication strategy. The party should leverage platforms like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, and YouTube to reach a wider audience and counter SLPP propaganda.
Establishing a team of media professionals and influencers who can disseminate accurate information, highlight the failures of the current administration, and promote APC’s vision for the future is crucial. Regular press conferences, community radio programs, and interactive social media sessions will keep the party connected with the public.
Moreover, Forming Strategic Alliances and Building Coalition will help. Winning the 2028 election will require building alliances with civil society organizations, religious leaders, and influential community figures. Forming coalitions with smaller political parties and advocacy groups can broaden APC’s support base and increase its chances of victory.
Engaging with the international community and election monitoring bodies to ensure free and fair elections will also be essential in preventing electoral malpractice.
Another issue could be Investing in Youth and Women Empowerment. The youth and women demographics are critical voting blocs in Sierra Leone. APC must create programs that empower young people and women economically and politically. Providing skills training, entrepreneurship opportunities, and leadership development initiatives will attract these groups to the party.
Encouraging young people and women to contest for political positions within the party will also demonstrate APC’s commitment to inclusivity and progress.
Strengthening Election Monitoring and Security Measures. Given the experiences of 2023, APC must establish a comprehensive election monitoring system to prevent rigging and voter intimidation. Deploying trained election observers, establishing a rapid response team for incidents of electoral violence, and engaging legal experts to address election disputes will be key. Collaborating with international election observers and human rights organizations will further enhance the credibility of the electoral process.
To conclude, the road to State House in 2028 is not paved with social media fantasies or conspiracy theories. It requires hard work, unity, strategic planning, and genuine engagement with the people of Sierra Leone. By focusing on internal unity, grassroots mobilization, effective communication, and practical policy solutions, APC can position itself as the true alternative to the current administration. APCians, the time to act is now. Put aside the pain of 2023 and march forward with determination and vision.
The people of Sierra Leone are looking to us for hope and leadership. They should not be disappointed.
