By Hassan Osman Kargbo

The National Publicity Secretary of the All People’s Congress (APC), Sidi Yahya Tunis, has said that his party will do “whatever, democratically,” to prevent the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) from repeating what he described as the irregularities that occurred during the 2023 general elections.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Truth Media, Tunis reaffirmed the APC’s readiness to defend the will of the people, stressing that the party remains fully prepared to take over governance come the 2028 elections.

“The APC is red and ready,” he declared. “We are determined to ensure that the will of the people is respected, and the current government will not be allowed to go against the wishes of Sierra Leoneans.”

His comments came amid growing political debate over remarks reportedly made by another APC figure, Hon. Abdul Kargbo (AKK), who was quoted as saying the opposition would make the country “ungovernable.” Tunis, however, appeared to distance the party from those comments, clarifying that such a statement does not represent the official position of the APC.

“I don’t know the context in which Hon. AKK made that statement,” Tunis said. “But as a party, we are focused on democratic engagement, not confrontation.”

Tunis emphasized that the APC remains committed to peaceful and lawful means of political participation. He said the party’s leadership is working to ensure that the 2028 elections are free, fair, and credible, and that the mistakes and controversies of 2023 are not repeated.

The APC spokesman further stated that the opposition has learned valuable lessons from the past election cycle and is strengthening its internal structures to effectively mobilize support across the country.

“Our focus is on building stronger grassroots connections and ensuring that every Sierra Leonean understands the APC’s vision for national development and good governance,” Tunis added.

Political analysts view his remarks as part of a broader effort by the APC to project unity and reassure both supporters and the public of its commitment to democratic principles. Observers have also noted that the party’s current tone suggests a more measured approach ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive 2028 general election.

Tunis concluded by calling on all political actors and institutions, including the Electoral Commission, to uphold transparency, fairness, and respect for the rule of law as Sierra Leone continues its democratic journey.

The APC’s message, he said, is clear: democracy must prevail, and the people’s choice must be respected.
