The Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU) has successfully completed its comprehensive recruitment process, which commenced in 2023 following the formal proclamation of the institution as a university under the Universities Act 2021.
Following this transition, the Government of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio demonstrated remarkable commitment to staff welfare by paying over 80% of the severance benefits owed to former employees of the Milton Margai College of Education and Technology (formerly a Polytechnic). This gesture was met with overwhelming gratitude from all the staff, many of whom expressed deep appreciation for the timely and transparent payment process — a sharp contrast to past experiences where severance packages took years to be settled.
“President Bio, we say thank you for changing our story and improving the lives of many families. We pray for the remaining less than 20% of payments to be made soon,” said one former staff representative.
In line with the University Court’s directive after the severance payments, the Administration was mandated to advertise vacancies to allow qualified former staff and new applicants to compete for positions under the new University framework. The recruitment advertisements were published over four times, both internally and externally, ensuring transparency and fairness.
A credible interview and short-listing panel was constituted, comprising retired and current professors from the University of Sierra Leone (USL) and Njala University, members of professional bodies, and representatives of the University Court. This rigorous process guaranteed the selection of candidates based on merit, qualifications, and good character.
MMTU maintains a zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment and corruption, particularly regarding “sex or money for grades.” The University has gained national recognition for its strong disciplinary stance, with lecturers who violated ethical codes being immediately dismissed.
“Today, we female students feel safe and respected. Our Vice Chancellor and Principal have restored integrity to the academic environment,” said one delighted female student.
The University Court, at its sitting on 9th September 2025, approved the final list of successful candidates recommended by the Appointments and Promotions Committee. However, a few unsuccessful former staff members attempted to challenge the decision. In response, a special Executive Committee of Court meeting, chaired by the Chancellor, Ing. Dr. Mohamed Ali Jalloh, reaffirmed the Court’s decision, emphasizing that:
- All interviewees must be officially informed of their outcomes.
- Newly recruited staff must adhere to the University’s internal redress mechanisms.
- Those not selected are encouraged to pursue alternative opportunities elsewhere.
A representative from the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) further clarified that the Recategorization Document issued by the TEC serves only as a salary and placement benchmark—not as an automatic recruitment guarantee.
Additionally, the Chancellor directed that:
- A public notice be issued confirming the completion of the recruitment process.
- All successful candidates undergo a formal orientation on the Universities Act 2021 and the University’s internal policies.
- Every recruited staff member must submit a medical report and a signed letter of acceptance before resuming duties.
The Administration has assured all stakeholders that it will strictly monitor compliance with the contract terms and institutional regulations.
As MMTU ushers in this new chapter, the entire University community looks forward to the payment of the new University salary structure by the end of October 2025 — a milestone reflecting the institution’s growth, stability, and renewed commitment to excellence.
Congratulations to the Milton Margai Technical University for this landmark achievement and to all newly recruited staff for being part of the institution’s transformative journey.
