Alhaji Manika Kamara, the outgoing Secretary General of the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), delivered an outstanding performance during the Presidential Debate organized by the Sierra Leone Reporters’ Union.

The debate, held under the theme “Strengthening Democratic Engagement and Accountability Within the Media Sector,” attracted wide attention ahead of the SLAJ 2025 National Elections scheduled for June 7th this year.

Mr. Kamara, who is now vying for the position of National president, demonstrated extraordinary excellence, impressing both the panel and audience with his depth of knowledge, clarity of vision, and commitment to media development and press freedom. His performance at the debate served as a clear reflection of his leadership capacity and readiness to serve the Association at the highest level.

Throughout the session, Manika highlighted critical issues facing the media in Sierra Leone, including the need for stronger institutional support, the protection of journalists’ rights, and the promotion of professionalism and accountability within the sector. He also emphasized his plans to foster inclusivity, strengthen regional media structures, and build partnerships to enhance the welfare and influence of journalists nationwide.

His bold and articulate responses earned applause from stakeholders, many of whom noted that his debate showing had effectively positioned him as a front-runner in the upcoming elections.

Having served SLAJ with distinction as Secretary General, Manika’s transition from administrative leadership to a broader executive role is seen by supporters as a natural progression fueled by dedication and vision. As the election date approaches, his debate performance has not only boosted his campaign but has also energized discussions about the future direction of SLAJ and the media landscape in Sierra Leone.

With his leadership qualities now clearly on display, Alhaji Manika Kamara stands as a formidable contender for the presidency of SLAJ, promising a new era of progressive leadership for journalists across the country.
