The United Bank for Africa (UBA)- Sierra Leone has reaffirmed its strong commitment to supporting and engaging the media, recognizing the vital role journalists play in national development and societal transformation.
This recognition was made by the Chief Operating Officer of UBA Sierra Leone, Mr. Chiedu Ngene, during the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) Annual Dinner and Awards Night on May 6, 2025, at the prestigious Bintumani International Conference Centre in Freetown.
In his address to media practitioners and dignitaries in attendance, Mr. Ngene expressed appreciation for the work of journalists across the country, and underscored the essential contribution of the media to a well-informed and progressive society.
“UBA Sierra Leone holds the media in high esteem and recognizes the critical role it plays in shaping society,” Mr. Ngene stated. “The media is not only a watchdog but also a bridge between institutions and the public. It helps to strengthen transparency, accountability, and public discourse.”
He noted that because of such a recognition, UBA consistently involves media professionals in all its activities, ranging from product launches and Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives to financial literacy campaigns and customer engagement programs.
According to Mr. Ngene, journalists serve as key partners in amplifying the bank’s impact and connecting its vision to communities across the country.
He added that UBA’s continued collaboration with the media is a reflection of the bank’s belief in open communication and shared responsibility in national growth.
“We see the media as more than observers. They are active contributors to change. That’s why we make sure they are included in everything we do,” he affirmed.
The SLAJ Dinner and Awards Night is one of the most anticipated events in Sierra Leone’s media calendar, celebrating journalistic excellence and promoting professional standards in the industry. The 2025 edition drew media professionals, corporate stakeholders, and development partners from across the country.
UBA’s visible presence at the event highlighted its ongoing support for media development and freedom of expression. The bank has, over the years, sponsored several media-related events and continues to advocate for responsible journalism as a cornerstone of democracy and development.
As part of the evening’s activities, several journalists were recognized for outstanding reporting in various categories including health, education, environment, and human rights.
The event concluded with renewed calls for stronger partnerships between the media and private sector actors, with UBA pledging to remain a committed ally of the press.
