The Auditor General of Sierra Leone Mr Abdul Aziz has been appointed as a member of the African Professionalisation Initiative Governing Council, marking a significant milestone for the country’s public financial management and external auditing landscape.
Mr Aziz was nominated by the African Organisation of English speaking Supreme Audit Institutions AFROSAI E as its official representative to the API Governing Council. The appointment places Sierra Leone at the heart of continental efforts aimed at strengthening professionalism in public sector accounting and auditing.
The African Professionalisation Initiative is an independent non-profit organisation established to strengthen the capacity and knowledge base of accounting and auditing professionals in the African public sector. Its core objective is to improve the quality of accounting and auditing services delivered to citizens across the continent. The Initiative works through collaboration, training, and the promotion of professional standards that support accountability and transparency in public finance.
API is a partnership between the accountancy profession and supreme audit institutions, represented by both the English and French speaking African Organisations of Supreme Audit Institutions AFROSAI E and AFROSAI F. Through this partnership, the Initiative promotes harmonised professional development frameworks that respond to Africa’s public sector needs.
In a congratulatory letter dated 27 January 2026, the Chief Executive Officer of API Evans Mulera described Mr Aziz’s nomination as a significant step toward strengthening continental collaboration in advancing public sector professionalisation. He noted that the decision reflects growing confidence in leadership from the region and the importance of inclusive representation in shaping Africa’s public financial future.
Mr Mulera further stated that Mr Aziz’s nomination was based on his proven expertise, strong professional network, distinguished leadership, and deep understanding of public financial management. According to the API leadership, these qualities will add value to the Governing Council as it continues to guide the Initiative’s strategic direction and programmes.
Within the Audit Service Sierra Leone, the appointment has been widely welcomed. Many staff members believe AFROSAI E’s decision is a recognition of Mr Aziz’s meaningful contributions to advancing public financial management both within Sierra Leone and internationally. Under his leadership, the Audit Service has continued to strengthen audit practices, promote transparency, and support reforms aimed at improving accountability in the use of public resources.
Observers say the appointment further strengthens Sierra Leone’s public financial management policies and practices. By having the country’s Auditor General represented at such a high level, Sierra Leone is better positioned to contribute to and benefit from continental reforms that enhance auditing standards and professional capacity.
The development is also seen as a boost to the country’s efforts to promote strong external auditing service delivery. Effective auditing remains a key pillar of good governance, helping to ensure that public funds are managed responsibly and in the best interest of citizens.
Mr Aziz’s appointment to the API Governing Council stands as a testament to Sierra Leone’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement in public sector financial management. It also highlights the growing recognition of the country’s role in shaping regional and continental governance initiatives.
