Cemeteries are to be closed at 7:00pm each day-FCC

The Freetown City Council has in a public notice dated 5 March 2024, informed the public that immediate effect, access to or through any cemetery must be terminated at 7:00 p.m each day.

According to the notice, the management of the Freetown City Council had noted with disdained the gross violations of the Peaceful rest of their departed compatriots by the opening of vaulted and carting away of metals and other items in the graves and very dishearteningly, the tampering with the Dead by taking away bones of the Dead.It added that the FCC is strong against it and the perpetrators should desist from those acts. The notice furthered that the dead must be allowed to rest in peace. As a result of the foregoing, the Freetown City Council announced that with immediate effect, access to or through any cemetery must be terminated at 7:00 p.m. each day, adding that no one is allowed to pass through or conduct any business in any cemetery from 7:00PM daily.

It continued that Freetown City Council is currently collaborating with the Inspector General of Police for the installation of Armed Police personnel to be stationed at the cemeteries and would institution punitive measures on defaulters.

It noted that the Council is kindly requesting all residents staying around the Perimeter of the cemeteries to help the council by being extra vigilant especially during the night hours and apprehend any suspect and hand them over to the Sierra Leone Police authority for subsequent prosecution.
