In a moment of great pride and recognition, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh, Chief Minister of Sierra Leone, delivered a powerful public lecture at Eastern Technical University (ETU) in Kenema on February 27th, 2025.
The lecture, titled “Artificial Intelligence and Equity: The Quest for Quality Education in Sierra Leone,” addressed the role of technology in shaping the future of education in the country. The event marked an important milestone in both his personal journey and Sierra Leone’s educational landscape, as he also received a prestigious special award from the university.
In his address, Dr. Sengeh shared his deep connection to ETU, calling it “a home” for him.
He expressed his honor in being part of the university’s graduation ceremony this year, and praised the institution for its dedication to excellence in education. “ETU has been a place of growth for many, and I’m proud to be here today to witness the success of the graduating students,” said the Chief Minister. “I feel truly privileged to stand among you as we celebrate this important milestone together.”
Dr. Sengeh also used the occasion to announce his personal commitment to supporting ETU’s future growth. In a significant gesture, he promised to donate computers to the university’s IT department, helping to strengthen the institution’s technological capabilities. “In today’s world, technology is essential to learning and development. It’s only fitting that we invest in equipping the next generation of leaders with the tools they need to succeed,” he remarked.
Furthermore, Dr. Sengeh shared his intentions to collaborate with the Minister of Higher Education and other key stakeholders to bring Starlink, the satellite internet service, to the ETU campus. Such a promise reflects his broader commitment to improving internet connectivity and digital access for students across the country, thus enabling a more inclusive learning environment.
Dr. Sengeh also urged the students of ETU to approach their education with the seriousness and commitment it deserves. “The world is evolving at a rapid pace, and artificial intelligence is going to play a pivotal role in shaping your careers and the country’s future. Embrace these changes, take your work seriously, and never stop learning,” he encouraged. His message resonated with the students, many of whom are now poised to enter various sectors of the workforce, including technology, healthcare, engineering and many more.
Following his lecture, Dr. Sengeh was awarded a special honor by the university, with a citation recognizing his immense contributions to the country. The citation read: “In recognition of your contributions and unwavering commitment to ensuring a more inclusive and just society.”
Dr. Sengeh expressed his deep gratitude for the award, saying, “This is my life’s work. Personally, professionally, and as a civic leader and politician, I will continue to work towards a more inclusive and just society. This recognition only strengthens my resolve to pursue that mission.”
The award was a significant moment in Dr. Sengeh’s career, symbolizing the impact he has had not only in the political arena but also in his advocacy for educational equity and technological advancement in Sierra Leone.
Dr. Sengeh concluded his speech by extending his heartfelt thanks to the staff and administration of Eastern Technical University for their invitation. The future of Sierra Leone is in your hands, and I believe you will make it a better place,” he said.
