On behalf of the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the Embassy in Sierra Leone has on Wednesday 11 June 2025 donated SLE 1,150,000,000 Old Leones to the National Public Health Agency (NPHA) to support its Mpox response.
Speaking at the presentation of the cheque to the Minister of Health, Dr Austin Demby, the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, His Excellency Wang Qing recalled the deep friendship China and Sierra Leone bonded during fighting Ebola and COVID-19 pandemic.
He shared that China has been paying highly attention to the Mpox epidemic from January, pointing out that the PRC Government has donated testing kits, assisted SL-China Friendship Hospital at Jui with P3 Biosafety lab from which they have been able to detect more than 2,000 positive cases.
HE Ambassador Wang Qing said most of the cases dected constitute more than 50% of all cases. He added that China Medical Team is actively conducting health education and providing medical care as much as they can.
China will always stand hands in hands with SL people to fight those diseases, to build a global community of health for all, he reassured.
Health Minister Dr Demby registered government’s profound thanked for China’s prompt support. He underscored the significance of solidarity as key to fight the epidemic. Dr Demby declared that with rapid response and support from communities and partners, we can bend the curve of the Mpox epidemic in the near future.
