The Ministry of Social Welfare has received a significant consignment of food items from the Chinese Embassy in Freetown to support vulnerable Muslim communities during the holy month of Ramadan. The donation, presented on March 18, 2026, included 300 bags of 25 kilogram rice, 30 bags of 50 kilogram sugar, and 30 gallons of 10 liter cooking oil.
The gesture reflects continued cooperation between Sierra Leone and China, especially in areas that directly impact the welfare of citizens. Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Alhaji Haji Kella, expressed appreciation to the Government and people of China for what he described as a timely and meaningful contribution.
He noted that relations between Sierra Leone and China are longstanding and have grown stronger over the years. According to him, the partnership is not new but continues to evolve in a positive direction, driven by mutual respect and shared development goals. He emphasized that the two countries have maintained diplomatic ties for over four decades, a relationship that has now matured into a strategic partnership.
Kella highlighted the government’s efforts to strengthen international engagement, including expanding diplomatic presence in key countries such as Saudi Arabia and China. He said these efforts have enhanced Sierra Leone’s global standing and created more opportunities for cooperation in critical sectors.
The Deputy Minister also underscored the Ministry’s commitment to promoting social cohesion by working closely with religious and community based institutions. He revealed that the Ministry is engaging the Inter Religious Council and other faith based organizations to foster unity and inclusiveness across the country.
He added that discussions are ongoing to deepen collaboration with international partners, including possible exchange programs that would allow religious leaders to visit China and share experiences. Kella said recent engagements with partners have been productive and that recommendations from those meetings will be submitted to the Minister for further action.
Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Zhao Yong, said the donation demonstrates his country’s commitment to supporting communities in Sierra Leone, particularly during important periods such as Ramadan. He reaffirmed China’s readiness to continue providing assistance through the Ministry of Social Welfare.
Ambassador Zhao emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between the two countries, noting that new opportunities are being explored to expand partnerships in social development and education. He disclosed plans to build stronger institutional links through an International Cooperation Center that will connect social work institutions in Sierra Leone with universities in China.
He also highlighted the importance of human capital development, stating that Sierra Leone has benefited from numerous training opportunities in China. According to him, over one hundred short term training placements were offered to Sierra Leoneans last year, and there are plans to increase that number.
In addition to social support, the ambassador pointed to ongoing development projects, including the modernization of the China Sierra Leone Friendship Hospital, the establishment of an education exchange center, and an agricultural technology demonstration center. He also confirmed progress on the national stadium renovation, with the first phase already completed.
Both officials expressed optimism that the partnership between Sierra Leone and China will continue to deliver meaningful benefits, particularly in improving livelihoods and strengthening community support systems.
