On Monday, November 25, 2024, a high-ranking delegation from the People’s Republic of China, led by Mr. Lai Mingyong, Vice Chairman of the Hunan Provincial CPPCC, paid a courtesy visit to the Sierra Leone Parliament to discuss the reinforcement of diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two nations.
In a formal address, Speaker of the Parliament, Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, extended a warm welcome to the delegation and reaffirmed the longstanding ties between Sierra Leone and China. He highlighted the fruitful history of collaboration between the two countries and expressed gratitude for China’s contributions to Sierra Leone’s development.
“We deeply value our friendship with China, which has stood the test of time. As a Parliament, we remain committed to sustaining and strengthening this relationship for the mutual benefit of our nations,” Speaker Thomas said, emphasizing Sierra Leone’s readiness to ratify agreements that support this partnership.
Opposition Leader Hon. Abdul Kargbo echoed these sentiments, expressing optimism about the enduring relationship between the two nations. He commended China for its role in funding critical development projects in Sierra Leone, particularly those that enhance parliamentary operations.
On behalf of the Chinese delegation, Mr. Lai Mingyong expressed appreciation for the hospitality extended by the Sierra Leone Parliament and acknowledged the 75 years of bilateral relations between the two countries. He reiterated China’s commitment to maintaining a strong and beneficial partnership with Sierra Leone, while encouraging further study exchanges to deepen mutual understanding and collaboration.
The Chinese delegation included notable officials such as the Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Wang Qing, and senior members of the Hunan Provincial CPPCC. Discussions culminated with a group portrait to commemorate the occasion.
