In a gesture of solidarity and friendship, the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone has donated 300 bags of rice (25kg each), 20 barrels of cooking oil, and 20 bags of sugar (50kg each) to support vulnerable communities during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
The donation was formally handed over to the Ministry of Social Welfare in a ceremony that underscored the deepening partnership between the two countries.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Ambassador Zhang Dianbin said the annual Ramadan donation symbolizes China’s enduring friendship with Sierra Leone and its commitment to interfaith harmony.
“This annual donation reflects our friendship with Sierra Leone and support for interfaith harmony,” he stated.
Deputy Minister of Social Welfare, Mohamed Haji Kalia, expressed gratitude on behalf of the government, emphasizing that China has been a consistent partner during Ramadan, Easter, and Christmas seasons. He noted that Chinese support to Sierra Leone extends beyond food aid to include educational scholarships, healthcare training, and major infrastructure projects, including the rehabilitation of the Siaka Stevens National Stadium.
Sheikh Ibrahim Barrie of the Supreme Islamic Council assured fair and transparent distribution of the donated items. He said the support would provide much-needed relief to Muslim families observing Ramadan, especially during challenging economic times.
The Ministry of Social Welfare announced that the distribution will prioritize women-led households, elderly citizens, and persons with disabilities, in line with the government’s inclusive welfare agenda.
The event also coincided with the celebration of 70 years of diplomatic relations between China and Sierra Leone. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in areas such as agriculture, infrastructure, and sustainable development.
Ambassador Zhang further revealed that China plans to transition from food aid to long-term agricultural partnerships aimed at empowering local communities and ensuring food security.
