The ECSL registration that started on the 3rd September 2022, and is scheduled to end on October 3rd, 2022 has concluded the first phase of the Registration process on Saturday 17/09/2022.
The second phase of the process is scheduled to start today Tuesday 20/09/2022, and it is estimated that 1, 815 centres will be opened across the country.
According to the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL) press statement dated 19/09/2022, it is stated that a total of 1,345,176 eligible voters registered from 80% of centres out of 3730 centres during the first phase of the voter registration process.
However, there is a missing 20% that was not mentioned in the press statement of ECSL, as a result concerned citizens want an explanation.
Meanwhile here is the breakdown of the total registered voters per region
: (1) Eastern Region……269,110
(2) Northern Region…241,827
(3) North- Western….188,048
(4) Southern Region.295, 759
(5) Western Area……350,432
Total…….1,345,176
The Electoral Commission Sierra Leone (ECSL), was established under Section 33 of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone, Act No. 6 of 1991, and Section 28 of the Chieftaincy Act, 2009. ECSL is charged with the task of preparing and conducting all public elections and referenda.
The Commission will be conducting elections for Sierra Leoneans to vote on 24 June 2023, to elect their president, MPs, Counsellors, District Council Chairpersons and Mayors. ECSL will be presiding over the fifth general election, fourth presidential, since the promulgation of the 1991 Constitutional.
In view of the above let me hasten to remind the commissioner that credible elections start with a credible voter registration process
Again based on the ECSL press statement 1,345,176 eligible voters were registered out of 3,634 centres across the country, and that is 80%. of the total
Mathematically it means there is a 20 % deficit somewhere that has not been accounted for,
Yes it is provisional; however, the commissioner needs to explain about the remaining 20% so that citizens will have no room for doubt.
Living the people in suspense regarding the circumstances of the 20%, has a tendency to create misgiving in their minds.
In this ECSL 80/20 scheme two things are likely involved, either the computation was wrong, or some foul play is about to take place. If it is an error, let the issue be rectified immediately.
If it is a dubious game, it brings to mind the economic theory of the Pareto Principle usually referred to as the 80/20 rule in business.
This principle serves as a general reminder that the relationship between inputs, and outputs is not balanced.
In other words, things in life are not always distributed evenly, and simply give a window into who to reward, and the people hope commissioner Konneh has no plan to use 80/20 plot to reward Pa Ramatulai-
This registration process is the first step of the electioneering calendar , hence for transparency and accountable purpose the carbon copy of the registration should be made available to all party agents- just as RRF is given to agents during election day.
Mr commissioner it sound awkward for citizens to be reminding you about what you ought to do.
In sum, citizens want an accurate data because moving forward they expect a credible, free and fair election. No Yuki -Yuki
