As the Calendar of Accused Persons is set for trial, the High Court judge in Sierra Leone, Hon. Justice N.C Browne Marke JSC, on 20 September this year told the court that the judiciary is set to try 83 accused persons for various offences.
Justice Browne Marke made this pronouncement on his call-over ceremony held at high court No.1, where he stated that the criminal matters ranged from various offences, to fraudulent conversion, murder, larceny in dwelling house, shop breaking and larceny, conspiracy to commit robbery with violence , robbery with aggravation, wounding with intent, burglary, housebreaking and larceny, sexual penetration amongst other.
Justice Browne Marke told the court a total of 83 criminal cases are set for trial and the highest number of criminal cases is sexual penetration with a latest number of 20 cases.
According to the several particulars of offences read by the court registrars during the session, most of the cases occurred late last year and early this year.
Court Registrar stated that cases are pushed to the high court for call-over after the end of preliminary investigation at the magistrate court as well as new indictment from the Law Officers Department.
Justice N.C Browne-Marke JSC said that “young people don’t want to learn a trade but they want to live a luxurious life”, which he said was leading them into crime.
He admonished the accused to stay away from trouble and find something better to do for themselves rather than going about breaking into people’s home.
