Inmates at the Makeni Correctional Service facility have benefitted from a timely donation of bundles of sachet water from two brothers with longstanding ties to the Sierra Leone Parliament. The donation was made during the recent oversight visit of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights to correctional facilities across the country.
The brothers, Chernor Sulaiman Bah and Mohamed Kargbo both of whom have served the Human Rights Committee of Parliament said the gesture was their way of giving back and reaffirming their commitment to human rights and the dignity of persons in correctional centers.
Mr. Bah, a current staff of Parliament, previously served as Clerk to the Human Rights Committee between 2015 and 2018 and returned to the same role in January 2025. His brother, Mr. Kargbo, also a former staff of Parliament, worked with the Committee between 2018 and 2021. The two noted that their years of experience with the Committee had exposed them to the conditions within correctional facilities, inspiring their initiative to contribute in a small but meaningful way.
Receiving the donation on behalf of the Correctional Center, Chief Superintendent Kelly expressed heartfelt gratitude. He thanked Mr. Bah and Mr. Kargbo for their kindness and noted that the donation would greatly benefit the inmates. He further prayed for blessings upon the donors and encouraged other individuals and organizations to emulate such thoughtful support.
Speaking during the presentation, the brothers stressed that while the donation was modest, it carried a strong message about compassion and the shared responsibility of society in upholding the rights of inmates.
Members of the Human Rights Committee, who were present during the donation, also praised the gesture, describing it as a demonstration of solidarity with the Committee’s oversight mission.
The donation comes at a time when the Committee is intensifying its oversight of correctional facilities across the country, ensuring that conditions meet human rights standards and that the welfare of inmates is not neglected.
For many, the brothers’ act stands as a reminder that promoting human rights is not only the responsibility of Parliament and government, but also of individuals and communities.
