The Deputy Minister of Energy, Dr. Eldred Taylor, has presented two transformative solar energy projects to Parliament, urging their ratification as critical steps towards achieving the country’s energy ambitions. The proposed projects include a 15–30 MWp Battery-Backed Solar PV Plant in Waterloo by Innovent SAS Limited and a 65 MWp Battery-Backed Solar PV Plant in Lungi by the Lungi Power Development Company.
Addressing the House, Dr. Taylor highlighted the projects’ potential to significantly boost energy supply, create jobs, and align with Sierra Leone’s transition to sustainable energy. He described the Waterloo project as essential for addressing the rising electricity demand in the industrial hub of Waterloo, while emphasizing its transformative role in advancing the nation’s renewable energy targets.
“The Waterloo project will support industries, improve power access, and meet growing demand. There is no better time to act than now,” Dr. Taylor stated.
The Lungi project, proposed under a Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) arrangement, aims to enhance energy capacity and reliability, which Dr. Taylor described as pivotal for achieving climate resilience and economic growth. “This project embodies our commitment to energy security and environmental sustainability,” he added.
The initiatives were lauded by Deputy Leader of Government Business, Hon. Bashiru Sidiki, who described the agreements as beneficial and urged members to support their ratification.
Hon. Kekura Vandi, Chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, reassured the House of the affordability of tariffs under both projects, emphasizing their capacity to address energy shortages in Waterloo and Lungi.
Opposition Leader Hon. Abdul Kargbo expressed optimism about the positive impact of the Lungi project, particularly for his constituents. He stressed the importance of such renewable energy projects in mitigating climate change and advancing development.
The projects represent a significant step forward in Sierra Leone’s efforts to expand renewable energy, boost the economy, and improve environmental sustainability. Parliament is expected to deliberate further on their ratification in the coming days.
