In a passionate and forward-looking statement, Dr. Ibrahim Bangura, one of the prominent contenders for the All People’s Congress (APC) presidential flagbearer position, has called on members of the Sierra Leonean diaspora and supporters at home to unite and prioritize the party’s collective interest ahead of the 2026 convention.
Dr. Bangura, speaking to a cross-section of Sierra Leoneans during a diaspora town hall engagement, stressed that the time has come for the APC to consolidate its base, rebuild trust, and present a united front as the party prepares for a return to national leadership. He urged members of the party to elect a flagbearer who is “red and ready”—someone deeply rooted in the party’s values and fully prepared to deliver tangible results for the people of Sierra Leone.
“If the APC is to reclaim power and lead this country out of its current socio-economic challenges, we must speak with one voice. The divisions and in-fighting have only weakened our cause. We need unity, purpose, and a flagbearer who embodies those qualities,” Dr. Bangura said.
He added, “I am offering myself to serve because I believe I can unify the party and the nation. But should the delegates choose another capable leader, I will wholeheartedly stand behind that individual. What matters most is that the APC wins and delivers on its promises.”
The statement comes at a crucial time when the APC is gearing up for a pivotal leadership decision in 2026 that will determine its presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections. Dr. Bangura’s message was particularly aimed at diaspora chapters, which continue to play a growing role in influencing party decisions through advocacy, fundraising, and strategic policy dialogue.
Over the years, the APC diaspora community has become a vital support system for the party, and Dr. Bangura acknowledged this during his speech. “You in the diaspora have resources, voices, and platforms that matter. Let us use these to unify, not to divide. Let us put our energy into rebuilding a party that every Sierra Leonean can trust,” he urged.
Known for his academic background, community development work, and political activism, Dr. Bangura has emerged as one of the leading figures in the race, gaining traction for his message of reconciliation, reform, and readiness. His call for unity has resonated with many who fear internal divisions could weaken the party’s chances in the upcoming elections.
Several attendees at the meeting welcomed Dr. Bangura’s commitment to support whichever candidate is democratically chosen by the party’s delegates. One participant, Aminata Kargbo, a long-time APC supporter in the UK, said, “Dr. Bangura showed real statesmanship. His humility and readiness to support others if he doesn’t win are qualities that the APC needs now more than ever.”
Another member of the audience, Mohamed Sesay, added, “We are tired of political infighting. We want to win in 2028. And that can only happen if we rally around the candidate with the vision and capability to lead us forward—whether it’s Dr. Bangura or someone else.”
Dr. Bangura concluded his remarks by urging members of the APC to think beyond personal ambitions and focus on the future of the party and the nation. “It is not about who gets the flag, it’s about who can carry it with dignity, courage, and results. I am red, I am ready, and I am here to serve.”
As the APC heads toward its flagbearer convention, voices like Dr. Bangura’s may prove critical in steering the party toward unity and electoral success.
