Dr. Ibrahim Bangura on April 8, 2026, paid a solidarity visit to the headquarters of the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation in Freetown following a devastating fire outbreak that destroyed critical broadcasting equipment worth millions of leones.

The fire, which caused significant damage to the state broadcaster’s facilities, has raised concerns about the continuity of public service broadcasting in the country. During his visit, Dr. Bangura expressed deep sympathy to the management and staff of SLBC, describing the incident as a major setback not only for the institution but for national information dissemination.

He emphasized the critical role the media plays in promoting democracy, accountability, and national development, noting that SLBC remains a vital platform for informing and educating the public. He encouraged the leadership and staff to remain resilient and hopeful despite the challenges posed by the incident.

“As a nation, we must continue to support institutions like SLBC that serve the public interest. This is a difficult moment, but with unity and determination, recovery is possible,” Dr. Bangura stated.

In a gesture of support, Dr. Bangura donated five thousand United States dollars and two laptop computers to assist the corporation in its recovery efforts. The donation, he said, is aimed at helping the institution restore some of its basic operational capacity while longer term rebuilding plans are considered.

The management of SLBC warmly received the donation and expressed gratitude for the timely intervention. Director General Josephine Kamara described the support as encouraging, especially at a time when the institution is grappling with the impact of the fire.

She noted that the destruction of key equipment has disrupted operations and created urgent needs, adding that such gestures demonstrate a strong commitment to the survival and growth of the national broadcaster.

Deputy Director General Mohamed Asmieu Bah also commended Dr. Bangura for his generosity, calling on other stakeholders, partners, and well meaning Sierra Leoneans to contribute to the rebuilding process.

He stressed that restoring SLBC to full capacity will require collective effort, sustained support, and strategic investment.

The incident has once again highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by public institutions and the need for improved safety measures and infrastructure resilience. As SLBC begins the process of recovery, management remains hopeful that with continued support, the institution will emerge stronger and better equipped to serve the nation.
