Dr. Richard Konteh has issued a strong rebuke to Chief Minister David Moinina Sengeh following the latter’s controversial remarks on AYV, where he dismissed opposition leaders as “unprogressive” for their critiques of government policies.

Dr. Konteh characterized Sengeh’s comments as “irresponsible” and “reckless,” warning that such rhetoric poses a significant threat to national unity and peace in Sierra Leone.

In a statement addressing the Chief Minister’s remarks, Dr. Konteh emphasized the importance of constructive criticism in a healthy democracy. He argued that labelling dissenting voices in such a derogatory manner deepens divisions and stifles the essential dialogue necessary to address Sierra Leone’s pressing challenges. “Healthy political discourse is a crucial pillar of democratic governance, and no progress can be made in Sierra Leone without engaging in open, respectful debates about policies and their implications for the people,” Dr. Konteh stated.

The All People’s Congress (APC) party, which Dr. Konteh represents, has historically been a potent political force in Sierra Leone, credited with substantial contributions to the nation’s growth and development.

Konteh pointed out the significant advancements made during the APC’s tenure in governance, including improvements in infrastructure, education, and economic growth. “Under the leadership of the APC, the country saw significant strides in governance. Unfortunately, much of this progress has been undermined by the current government over the past seven years,” he lamented.

Dr. Konteh also took issue with Sengeh’s past disparaging remarks, accusing the Chief Minister of previously targeting members of his own party as well as religious leaders. “If this is your trademark of disrespect, please ensure it does not extend to our party and its leadership that we hold in the highest esteem due to their invaluable service to this country,” he said, urging a more respectful approach towards political discourse.

Concluding his remarks, Dr. Konteh stressed the necessity for a united Sierra Leone, where political differences are acknowledged and respected. He called for a focus on inclusive governance, highlighting that national unity and peace can only be achieved when all voices—whether from the government or opposition—are heard. “Instead of engaging in divisive language, we must work towards a united Sierra Leone that prioritizes improving the livelihoods of our citizens,” he implored.

Dr. Konteh’s statement serves as a clarion call for more respectful and constructive political dialogue as the nation grapples with its current challenges. As tensions rise, he advocates for a collaborative approach, emphasizing that the future of Sierra Leone hinges on the capacity for all parties—regardless of their affiliations—to work together for the common good.
