The Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) has recently arrested scores of people within West of Freetown for tampering with EDSA meters.
The EDSA Director of Communications, Sahr Nepor, disclosed that some residents of Signal Hill and Scan Drive communities were amongst defaulters in police net, currently helping with investigations; and that the acts of those arrested by the law enforcement agencies have negative impacts of the supply of electricity to consumers.
Nepor made the disclosure whilst addressing journalists at government’s weekly news conference hosted at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Corporation Conference Hall, Tower Hill, Freetown.
He informed that those arrested would face the full penalty of the law; and if found guilty, pay a fine of Fifty Million Leones or an alternative of five years’ imprisonment as in line with the Electricity Act.
He furthered that EDSA has a list of customers who connect cables from street poles to home meters as well as from the internal wirings, adding that EDSA has been able to appreend dozens of customers for illegal electricity abstractions, which he said has been challenging for the authority.
He therefor encouraged customers to refrain from illegals electricity abstractions, informing that EDSA would ensure that all their bills are fully paid as electricity supply to consumers and customers is of national concern.
