Police sources from the headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department in Freetown on Monday 3rd October 2022 reliably informed FORUM that the former Inspector General of Police, Ambrose Michael Sovula was invited, interrogated by the police investigators in connection with the forty feet container, detained for several hours and was released late Tuesday 4th October 2022 evening.
The invite of the former police boss this medium learnt was in directly linked to the landing of a suspicious forty feet container allegedly loaded with consignment of large kilograms of cocaine that reportedly landed at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay in Freetown, in July this year. The alleged forty feet cocaine container was later escorted by a heavily guarded police convoy from Freetown to the Police Officers’ Mess at Kingtom.
When contacted Police Headquarters for clarification, Police Spokesman and Head of Public Relations, Assistant Commissioner, Brima Kamara replied: “I am not aware. I am in up country”.
CIDHQ personnel said on conditions of anonymity that their ex-IGP is being roped in for questioning in connection with the unlawful landing of the alleged forty feet cocaine container at the Freetown Port, and for provision of police escort from the port to the to Kingtom Police Officers’ Mess at Kingtom. They disclosed that Ambrose Michael Sovula is being called for routine interrogations as a result of his alleged roles in the handling, escort and search of the suspicious cocaine container.
A personnel contacted in person at the Police Media and Public Relations Department, at the Police Headquarters on George Street in Freetown, for their comment on the invite of the former police chief, and the continuing probity, smiled broadly and stopped short from commenting on the issue.
It could be recalled that when the forty feet container in question landed at the Freetown Port instead of scanning it at the port, it was escorted by a heavily guarded police convoy from the port to the Kingtom Police Officers’ Mess, where chicken wings were discovered, instead of the alleged cocaine which was widely perceived to be loaded in the container.
Following disclosure of the consignment in the presence of the media and Civil Society the then Inspector General of Police, Ambrose Michael Sovula was sacked and replaced with William Fayia Sellu as the substantive police chief. Also relocated in connection with the forty feet container saga, was the former Aide Camp to President Julius Maada Bio, who was transferred from State House/Presidential Lodge to Police Headquarters.
