Freetown City Council in collaboration with CHANGE, WoLEAD and SLURC recently held a series of meetings with stakeholders from the Susan’s Bay Community for consultations regarding the pilot phase of the “Freetown Caring City” project that is being implemented in the community.
The Freetown Caring City Project is the first of its kind in Africa, replicating a model that is currently being used in the city of Bogota in Columbia.
The project will involve the construction of a single storey building in the heart of Susan’s Bay Community. It will provide a safe space for women caregivers to access services that will help reduce some of the burden of unpaid care work that they provide for their dependents. Services will be accessed free of charge and will include adult education, reproductive health services and daycare for children and disabled persons.
With funding from the International Development Research Centre, the Freetown Caring City Project is an intervention in the Human Capital Development Cluster of the #TransformFreetownTransformingLives agenda. Empowerment and skills building for women!
