The First Lady of Sierra Leone, Madam Fatima Maada Bio, has represented the country and the African continent at the Fostering the Future Global Coalition Summit held in Washington, D.C.
The high level gathering was convened at the invitation of Melania Trump and brought together global leaders, policymakers, and development partners to discuss strategies for promoting inclusive growth and sustainable development for children and communities worldwide.
Madam Bio’s participation placed Sierra Leone among countries contributing to international dialogue on the future of young people, particularly in areas of education, healthcare, and digital transformation. The summit provided a platform for leaders to share experiences and explore collaborative approaches to addressing challenges affecting children and vulnerable populations.
During her intervention, the First Lady emphasized the growing importance of technology in shaping the future of societies. She highlighted how artificial intelligence is increasingly influencing key sectors such as education and healthcare, with the potential to improve access, efficiency, and outcomes if properly managed.
She noted that while technological advancement presents opportunities, it also comes with responsibilities. Dr Bio called for the inclusive and ethical use of artificial intelligence, stressing that innovation must be guided by policies that protect children and ensure equal access to opportunities.
According to her, governments and stakeholders must work together to ensure that technological progress does not widen existing inequalities. Instead, she urged that digital tools should be used to empower young people, enhance learning systems, and strengthen healthcare delivery, particularly in developing countries.
The summit also focused on building partnerships that can drive sustainable solutions. Participants discussed the need for coordinated efforts between governments, private sector actors, and international organizations to invest in programs that support child welfare and community development.
First Lady reiterated Sierra Leone’s commitment to advancing policies that prioritize children and youth. She pointed to ongoing efforts in the country aimed at improving education and promoting social protection, while encouraging global cooperation to address shared challenges.
Observers say her participation reflects Sierra Leone’s growing engagement in international forums and its willingness to contribute to global conversations on development and innovation.
The Fostering the Future Global Coalition Summit concluded with a renewed call for collective action to ensure that children everywhere have access to opportunities that enable them to thrive. Leaders at the event agreed that inclusive and forward looking policies will be essential in building a more equitable future.
Fatima Bio’s contribution underscored the importance of ensuring that Africa remains part of global decision making processes, particularly on issues that directly impact the next generation.
