As International Mother’s Day comes to a close, women from Kailahun and Kenema Districts have made a passionate appeal to the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) to consider Ambassador Alie Kabba as its Presidential flagbearer for the 2028 elections.
Speaking during local Mother’s Day celebrations, several women leaders praised Amb. Kabba’s longstanding advocacy for women’s rights and empowerment, calling him a “true champion for gender equality.”
“Ambassador Alie Kabba has always stood by us,” said Mariama Fofanah, a community organizer in Kenema. “From his work in government to his voice on international platforms, he has consistently pushed for women’s inclusion and leadership.”
The endorsement highlights early political maneuvering within the SLPP as the party looks toward its future leadership. Kabba, who previously served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and later as Sierra Leone’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, is widely respected for his progressive ideals and grassroots connections.
Observers say this show of support from traditionally influential districts could position him as a strong contender in the coming years.
“That’s an interesting development. A statement like this reflects the growing importance of gender advocacy in Sierra Leonean politics. Ambassador Alie Kabba has long been known for his pro-women stance, especially during his time as Minister of Foreign Affairs and later as Permanent Representative to the UN. If women in regions like Kailahun and Kenema — both strongholds of the SLPP — are rallying behind him this early, it could signal a grassroots push for leadership that champions gender equity”, one Diplomat name withheld commented.
