Former National Secretary General of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Umaru Poteon Koroma, has firmly dismissed widespread social media claims suggesting that funds went missing from the party’s account during his tenure. The allegations, which were amplified by a viral video circulating on various online platforms, accused past administrators of financial mismanagement—claims Koroma says are entirely false and intended to create unnecessary tension within the party.
In a detailed statement issued in Freetown, Koroma clarified that every financial transaction conducted under his leadership was fully documented, appropriately recorded, and executed in line with the SLPP’s established financial procedures. He highlighted the specific case of one million new leones generated from fundraising activities at the Bintumani Conference, noting that the amount was duly deposited into the party’s account and supported by official paperwork.
According to Koroma, the records from his administration remain intact and accessible for verification. He described the allegations as misleading and potentially harmful, especially at a time when the party is preparing for a crucial electoral cycle.
Koroma welcomed the decision of the newly elected SLPP executive to conduct an internal audit into the party’s finances. He emphasized that such a review would not only clear doubts but also reinforce transparency and accountability within the organization. He expressed complete confidence that the findings would validate the credibility and integrity of his stewardship.
The former National Secretary General warned that careless statements, public attacks, and internal accusations could undermine the party’s stability and cohesion. He urged members to avoid inflammatory rhetoric that could damage reputations or weaken the collective resolve of individuals who had dedicated years of service to the SLPP.
Koroma cautioned that the party cannot afford internal fractures as it looks toward the 2028 general elections, a contest he described as critical for sustaining the developmental legacy of President Julius Maada Bio. He insisted that unity, discipline, and focus are essential if the SLPP is to maintain its political dominance.
“I call on everyone to tone down and concentrate on the task of winning the 2028 elections to maintain and protect the legacy of President Julius Maada Bio,” Koroma said. He stressed that the party’s primary objective should be to strengthen its internal structures, enhance grassroots engagement, and present a united front ahead of the next national polls.
Koroma also reflected on the need for responsible leadership within the party, noting that disagreements should be handled through dialogue, respect, and adherence to institutional processes. He reminded party stakeholders that political opponents stand to benefit when internal conflicts overshadow collective goals.
Concluding his statement on a personal and reflective note, Koroma extended warm festive greetings to SLPP members and their families. He expressed gratitude for the trust and collaboration he enjoyed during his time in office and reaffirmed his readiness to continue supporting the party whenever called upon.
He reiterated his loyalty to the SLPP and pledged to contribute positively to its future efforts, stressing that political service remains a commitment he holds with pride and responsibility.
Koroma’s call for peace, truth, and unity underscores the broader message of his response: that the SLPP must remain collectively focused, internally organized, and outwardly resilient as it prepares for the political battles ahead.
