The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has confirmed the death of four people and injuries to three others following a mining pit collapse in Kumao Community, Nimikoro Chiefdom, Kono District. The tragic incident occurred on Thursday, December 18, leaving families and residents in shock as emergency teams moved in to conduct rescue operations.

According to NDMA, the victims, identified as Abdul Bangura, Fatmata Bangura, Adamansay Thullah and Sampa Kargbo, were engaged in illegal mining activities at the time of the collapse. Their bodies were recovered on Friday, one day after the incident, following difficult rescue efforts due to the unsafe condition of the site. The three injured individuals were immediately transported to the Kono Government Hospital for medical attention, NDMA officials confirmed.

The rescue and recovery operation was a joint effort that involved the NDMA, the Sierra Leone Police, the Office of National Security, and community volunteers who worked tirelessly to dig through the rubble. Local residents expressed concern over the frequent rise in unlawful mining activities in the district, often carried out without safety measures or official supervision.

In a formal statement, the NDMA announced the immediate closure of the affected mining location. The agency stressed that the decision was taken to protect public safety and prevent further risk to lives. It added that illegal mining continues to pose a threat to community safety, particularly in districts where poverty and unemployment drive people to search for alternative means of earning income.

The NDMA also disclosed that an investigation committee is being set up to examine the circumstances that led to the collapse. The committee will assess the level of compliance with mining safety regulations and identify individuals or entities involved in unauthorized mining activities in the area. The agency assured the public that appropriate actions will be taken once the investigation is completed and recommendations are finalized.

This latest incident adds to growing concerns over mining-related fatalities in Sierra Leone, especially in Kono, where artisanal and small-scale mining remains widespread. Residents have repeatedly appealed for stronger enforcement of mining laws, improved community sensitization, and more opportunities for legal and safer livelihood activities.

The NDMA extended condolences to the families of the deceased and reaffirmed its commitment to preventing similar tragedies. As investigations continue, community members hope that authorities will provide long-term solutions to address illegal mining and protect lives across the district.
