Kenema City, Sierra Leone The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. William Fayia Sellu, has assured the Catholic community that the death of Rev. Fr. Augustine Dauda Amadu will not merely be recorded as another statistic, but will form part of active police prosecution efforts.
Speaking during a condolence visit to the Catholic Pastoral Center in Kenema City on Wednesday 3rd September 2025, IGP Sellu stated that the tragic death of Fr. Amadu who was strangled in the early hours of Sunday, 31st September 2025, at the Burma Section will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.
“This will not go down as just another number in our data. It will be part of our prosecution statistics. Justice will be pursued,” the IGP affirmed.
The police chief acknowledged the grief and anxiety within the Catholic community and assured clergy members of their safety. He emphasized that the Sierra Leone Police Force is committed to uncovering not just the perpetrators but also the motive behind what he described as a “heinous act.”
IGP Sellu linked the incident, along with recent armed robberies in Bo and Freetown, to an unfortunate period when Sierra Leone has otherwise been ranked among the most peaceful nations in Africa 5th overall in Africa, 3rd in West Africa, and 1st in the Mano River Union Basin.He disclosed that suspects in the recent Freetown robberies have already been apprehended and are currently facing trial, underscoring ongoing progress in the investigation of Fr. Amadu’s murder.
“We will leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to justice,” he added.The Vicar General, Very Rev. Fr. Stephen Tamba Kumasi, speaking on behalf of the Catholic clergy, expressed concerns over growing insecurity, noting multiple incidents of theft targeting church facilities. He, however, commended the IGP for his commitment and swift response.
As part of his visit, the IGP also toured the crime scene with investigators and church officials to further assess developments in the case.
