A popular traditional artist, Ngor Bgetuwa of Moyamba fame one of his ace post-war songs, was Wednesday 24 July 2024 laid to rest in his home in Kenema at a funeral that was graced by artists from across the country and beyond.
Died at 62 after battling with illness, Gbetuwa was a household name with cars across the nation. His craft rose to fame after the 11 years civil war when he released songs; ‘Awa Muyamayea’, ‘Moyamba’, etc. which were aimed at promoting national unity and reparations. These among other songs of Gbetuwa speak largely to the daily struggles of the lives of Sierra Leonean compatriots; continue to emotionally thrill thousands of his fans.
Paying tribute to Gbetuwa, Lansana Sheriff, popular known as Steady Bongo, prayed that God grand the depart soul eternal rest. May the soul of Ngor Gbetuwa rest in peace’, prayed Steady and profusely thanked all artists who paid Gbetuwa respect him. Steady Bongo also encouraged all artists to remain united in pursuing their respective dreams. Ami Kallon recalled that they used to fight for one course along with Gbetuwa. She said that they fought for Sierra Leone and the SLPP but when God has called you, you have to answer to the call of the Almighty. She entreated all to continue to rely on God for everything. You are going may your soul rest in peace.
Gbetuwa’s contributions to Sierra Leonean music can never be overstated. He was a pioneer in the field of culture music, and his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Despite his success and popularity, Gbetuwa remained humble and always gave credit to his roots and Sierra Leonean culture.
