The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, has officially launched an e-mobility initiative, introducing electric vehicles, electric tricycles (kekehs), and electric motorbikes alongside charging stations. The launch took place at the Miatta Conference Hall in Freetown.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Minister of Transport and Aviation, Mr. Rex Bonapha, highlighted the durability and efficiency of the electric machines, noting that their charging facilities can sustain operations for extended periods. He emphasized that the initiative is expected to alleviate long queues at fuel stations, create employment opportunities for young people, and contribute significantly to the country’s economic growth.
“This is a transformative step towards improving transportation in Sierra Leone while boosting the state economy,” Bonapha stated.
The e-mobility program marks a significant development in Sierra Leone’s transport sector, aligning with efforts to modernize infrastructure and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The initiative has generated widespread public interest and discussions on the country’s readiness to compete with other advanced African nations in adopting green technology.
