The historic Jamiul Atiq Mosque in Fourah Bay received a significant boost in its expansion efforts, thanks to a generous donation from Hon. Alhaji Minkailu Mansaray, Chairman of the All People’s Congress (APC).
His contribution of Le100 million and 100 bags of cement, made during the turning of the sod ceremony on Sunday, February 2, 2025, has been lauded as an act of profound community solidarity and faith.
For many residents of Fourah Bay, the mosque is more than just a place of worship, but also a cornerstone of their daily lives, a site of spiritual rejuvenation, and a symbol of their cultural heritage.
The donation not only demonstrates Hon. Mansaray’s commitment to religious institutions but also highlights the broader importance of community-driven initiatives in fostering unity and development.
The ceremony, held within the mosque’s premises, was a deeply spiritual and emotionally charged event. It brought together government officials, religious scholars, and local community members, all eager to witness the beginning of a project that promises to uplift the mosque’s structure and accommodate its growing congregation.
The occasion commenced with an opening prayer led by Imam Alhaji Alhassan Nuru Deen Karim, setting a sacred tone for what was to come.
The secretary of the mosque, Alhaji Prof. Abdul Babatunde Karim, welcomed attendees with heartfelt remarks, emphasizing the historical and social importance of Jamiul Atiq Mosque.
He expressed gratitude to all those contributing to its development, particularly Hon. Mansaray, whose donation was seen as a beacon of hope and progress.
Alhaji Alieu Mahdi, chairman of the Project Implementation Committee, underscored the need for the expansion, noting that the increasing number of worshippers had made it imperative to modernize and enlarge the mosque’s facilities.
His sentiments were reinforced by Alhaji Ing. Alpha Badamasi Savage, the consulting engineer, who assured the audience that the project would be executed with efficiency and quality craftsmanship.
The highlight of the event was Hon. Mansaray’s impassioned speech, in which he reaffirmed his dedication to the well-being of the community. ‘‘The Jamiul Atiq Mosque is not just a building; it is the heart of our community, a place where faith and unity thrive. It is our responsibility to preserve and improve it for future generations,’’ he stated.
His generous contribution was met with resounding applause, as many saw it as an inspiring gesture of goodwill and commitment to societal growth. In a time when communities face various socio-economic challenges, such acts of philanthropy remind people of the power of collective effort and shared values.
Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, the keynote speaker at the event, praised Hon. Mansaray’s generosity, noting that such contributions are essential in strengthening the social fabric of Sierra Leone. ‘‘Religious institutions play a crucial role in our society. They provide guidance, education, and a sense of belonging. Supporting them means investing in the moral and ethical strength of our nation,’’ he said.
He further emphasized the need for continued collaboration between the government, community leaders, and individuals to ensure that places of worship remain beacons of peace and progress. The Vice President then led the official turning of the sod, marking the symbolic start of construction alongside Imam Karim and other dignitaries.
As the event drew to a close, Haja Mariama Wahid delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, acknowledging the collective efforts of all those involved in making the expansion project a reality. The final prayers were led by representatives from various mosques in Freetown, cementing the day’s significance as one of unity and shared purpose.
For the residents of Fourah Bay, the donation and the expansion project represent much more than physical renovations. They symbolize the enduring power of faith, the generosity of community leaders, and the boundless potential that comes from working together toward a common goal.
As construction begins, the people look forward to a renewed place of worship that will continue to serve as a pillar of faith and togetherness for generations to come.
