In a bold and spirited declaration held at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown, Hon. Abdul Osman Timbo officially announced his intention to lead the All People’s Congress (APC) party into the 2028 general presidential election. The announcement, made on International Labour Day, was met with overwhelming support from thousands of Sierra Leoneans who filled the venue and its surroundings in a show of solidarity and optimism for a new political direction.
Timbo, a rising political figure with a reputation for youthful energy and progressive thinking, said the decision to announce his candidacy on May 1st was intentional. “The choice to hold this event today, on Labour Day, is deliberate,” he stated. “It is a day to commemorate the struggles and contributions of Sierra Leone’s hardworking citizens — from market women and fishmongers to nurses, teachers, okada riders, and even our unemployed youth.”
In his keynote address, Timbo expressed deep gratitude to those in attendance, noting their presence as a reflection of a growing national desire for change. “I want to thank you all for taking time out of your schedules to witness this event,” he said. “It shows your belief in the young people, your willingness to listen to a new message, and your interest in a better future for Sierra Leone.”
Addressing the crowd, he painted a vivid picture of the hardship faced by ordinary citizens under the current economic and social climate. He highlighted the daily struggles of workers in both the formal and informal sectors, calling attention to low wages, unemployment, and the lack of social mobility. “We are a nation where salaries can no longer meet basic needs. Where our young people drop out of school with no hope for employment. That is unacceptable,” he declared to rousing applause.
Timbo’s message resonated strongly with the youth, women’s groups, labor representatives, and grassroots supporters, many of whom see him as a new face of leadership in a party long dominated by older political figures. His speech emphasized inclusion, economic reform, and the need for bold policies to empower the working class.
“My candidacy is not just about politics; it is about people. It’s about restoring dignity to our workforce, creating opportunities for our youth, and making sure every Sierra Leonean, regardless of background, has a chance to thrive,” he said.
The declaration marks the beginning of what is expected to be a highly competitive race within the APC as the party begins its internal restructuring and search for a presidential flagbearer ahead of 2028. While other contenders are yet to officially announce their intentions, Timbo’s early declaration signals both his readiness and strategic positioning as a serious contender.
Political observers note that his candidacy could reshape the APC’s public image and appeal to a younger, more diverse electorate. “Timbo represents a generational shift,” said political analyst Fatmata Sesay. “He speaks directly to the concerns of the average Sierra Leonean, and his Labour Day message hit the right notes.”
As the event concluded, chants of support echoed across the hall and into the streets, with supporters donning red and waving banners that read “Timbo 2028: Hope for the People.” Many attendees expressed hope that this moment marks the beginning of a transformative era in Sierra Leonean politics.
With his message of hope, inclusivity, and people-first governance, Hon. Abdul Osman Timbo has officially stepped into the national spotlight — and Sierra Leone is watching.
