Octopus Energy Generation, in collaboration with actor and entrepreneur Idris Elba, has unveiled plans for Sierra Leone’s first-ever wind farm, marking a landmark renewable energy initiative in West Africa. Announced at COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Sherbro Island project is set to break ground next year, establishing a pioneering renewable energy source that will power the island’s economy and provide clean energy to 2,000 households annually.
The proposed facility, featuring up to five wind turbines with solar panels and battery storage, aims to address Sherbro Island’s urgent need for reliable energy. Located near Bonthe, the island’s primary town and a hub of economic activity, the wind farm will support essential services such as schools, medical facilities, and local industries, particularly the island’s fishing sector. Currently, only 5% of rural Sierra Leone has access to electricity, highlighting the transformative impact this project could have on the local community.
“This wind farm isn’t just about energy—it’s about building a sustainable foundation for growth and independence,” said Idris Elba. “With installation slated for next year, it will serve as a powerful testament to our commitment to a greener future for Sierra Leone and beyond.”
The project is poised to create numerous green jobs and foster skill development among young Sierra Leoneans, with plans to partner with local universities for training in renewable energy maintenance and operations. This initiative comes at a critical time for Sierra Leone, where 42% of the population is under 15, and providing essential employment opportunities for the nation’s youth and creating ripple effects across sectors like infrastructure and shipping.
Zoisa North-Bond, CEO of Octopus Energy Generation, underscored the project’s significance: “Our first renewables project in Africa is a milestone. The insights and data we gather will serve as a blueprint to scale similar projects, as we work to establish Sierra Leone as a renewables leader.”
This endeavor aligns with Sierra Leone’s target of achieving 85% renewable energy by 2030 and addresses the unique environmental challenges facing Sherbro Island, which is vulnerable to rising sea levels and heavy rainfall. The data generated from the wind farm will also support future renewable projects across the country.
Octopus Energy Generation, which manages a portfolio of green energy projects worth £7 billion ($9 billion) and powers 2.4 million homes globally, continues to lead in developing innovative energy solutions. From its “Fan Club” tariff, offering discounted energy to residents near wind turbines, to “Winder,” a digital platform enabling communities to advocate for new turbines, Octopus is pioneering the clean energy transition.
Through this groundbreaking project, Octopus and Elba aim to advance Sierra Leone’s renewable infrastructure and build lasting economic resilience.
