The Institute for Legal Research and Advocacy for Justice (ILRAJ) has issued a strongly worded condemnation of recent remarks made by the All People’s Congress (APC) Falaba District Chairman, Hon. Lahai Marah, during a tripartite engagement at the Falaba District Council Hall. The organization described his statements as reckless, inflammatory, and a direct threat to Sierra Leone’s national security.
Hon. Marah reportedly told attendees that the APC “has the capacity to resist the military and the police,” and made reference to the use of drones and other forms of advanced technological warfare. He also suggested that private military support could be easily procured if needed. These comments have drawn sharp criticism from civil society, legal analysts, and democratic governance advocates who say such rhetoric is unacceptable, especially at a time when the country continues to work toward strengthening democratic institutions.
In its statement, ILRAJ said Marah’s remarks undermine national cohesion and show a disturbing disregard for the country’s post-war progress. The organization noted that Sierra Leone has spent years building trust in democratic processes and institutions following the civil conflict, and that peacebuilding efforts grounded in the findings of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission must be protected from any form of provocative or destabilizing political language.
According to ILRAJ, the platform where the statements were made was intended to promote dialogue, trust, and cooperation ahead of the 2028 elections. Instead, the organization said, the meeting was overshadowed by language that evoked confrontation, resistance to lawful authority, and the possibility of political violence. ILRAJ stressed that this type of rhetoric has no place in the country’s political space and must be condemned without hesitation.
The organization has called on the national leadership of the APC to distance itself from the comments and to take immediate disciplinary action against Marah. ILRAJ further urged the party to establish internal safeguards to prevent similar incidents, emphasizing that political leaders have a responsibility to guide their supporters toward peaceful and lawful participation in national affairs.
ILRAJ also appealed to all political actors, regardless of party affiliation, to refrain from statements that may increase tension or encourage hostility. The organization emphasized the need for political players to recommit themselves to dialogue, mutual respect, and the principles of democratic governance. It said that Sierra Leone’s progress depends on leaders who uphold peace, respect institutions, and avoid language that could be interpreted as a call to violence.
In closing, ILRAJ reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the rule of law, defending human rights, and supporting peaceful democratic engagement. The organization said it will continue monitoring developments surrounding the incident and will advocate for accountability where necessary to ensure that Sierra Leone’s democracy remains stable and protected.
ILRAJ concluded by reminding political leaders that their words carry weight and must contribute to national unity rather than threaten the peace the country has worked so hard to maintain.
