The iconic Fourah Bay College Masjid, a cornerstone of spiritual life on campus since the 1980s; has served the Muslim community at the shores of FBC for far too long. In a bid to address safety concerns and accommodate the growing Muslim community on campus, the Fourah Bay College Muslim Jamaat (FBCMJ) has announced plans to demolish and reconstruct the Fourah Bay College Masjid. The ambitious project is set to commence immediately after Ramadan, with the Jamaat appealing to Muslims, Alumni home and abroad, concerned individuals, local and international organizations, and the government for support.

The decision to reconstruct the Masjid stems from urgent structural issues plaguing the current building. Engineers have warned that the aged structure is weakened, with fears of collapse looming. Students have reported hearing footsteps from the top floor, raising concerns about the safety of the premises.

Moreover, the inadequacy of space within the Masjid has been a longstanding challenge, particularly evident during Friday’s “Jumuah” Prayers when students are forced to pray outside, enduring harsh weather conditions. This lack of space also hampers the ability to conduct religious teachings effectively, hindering students’ access to vital knowledge about their faith.

Addressing these concerns, the FBCMJ emphasizes the importance of modernised facilities within the Masjid to facilitate religious education and accommodate the growing Muslim population at Fourah Bay College. The Jamaat stresses that the success of this venture hinges on the collective support of the Muslim community, urging individuals to contribute in any way possible.

Quoting the Prophet Muhammad (saw), who stated, “Whoever builds a Masjid for Allah, Allah will build for him a house in Paradise,” ( From Muslim) the FBCMJ underscores the spiritual significance of the project and implores Muslims to seize this opportunity for blessings and rewards in the hereafter.

As preparations for the reconstruction effort gain momentum, the FBCMJ calls for unity and support from all corners, invoking prayers for Allah’s blessings and provision to see the project through to fruition.
