Sani Abacha Street in Freetown, known as one of the busiest commercial hubs in Sierra Leone, was filled with excitement and gratitude when one of the leading flag bearer aspirants of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC), Sheik Mohamed Omodu Kamara, popularly known as Jagaban, donated NLe4.5 Million to empower market women. The gesture has been described by many as a historic act of compassion and a demonstration of his commitment to uplifting women who form the backbone of Sierra Leone’s informal economy.
The donation was officially handed over to women traders at Sani Abacha Street Market over the weekend. According to Jagaban, the initiative is designed to ease the financial struggles of women, many of whom depend on petty trading to support their families, pay school fees, and put food on the table. He noted that empowering women economically means strengthening families and, by extension, the nation.
“I have always believed that when you empower a woman, you empower an entire household,” Jagaban said during the presentation. “Our market women are among the hardest-working Sierra Leoneans, yet they face daily challenges that limit their potential. This support is meant to help them expand their businesses and improve their livelihoods.”
The donation sparked overwhelming appreciation from the beneficiaries. Market women danced, sang, and cheered in joy, describing Jagaban as a leader with a heart for women. They noted that unlike promises they often hear from politicians, Jagaban has demonstrated his commitment through action.
Madam Hawa Conteh, one of the traders, expressed gratitude on behalf of her colleagues. “Today we feel seen, respected, and valued. Jagaban has touched our lives in a way no one else has. With this support, we can buy more goods, feed our children, and pay our debts. We will never forget this kindness,” she said.
Another beneficiary, Mariama Koroma, highlighted how the funds will ease the burden of high market costs. “The economy has been very tough, and many of us were struggling to keep our stalls running. Jagaban has given us hope. He has shown us that he cares about women and understands our struggles,” she said with emotion.
The women further pledged their loyalty and prayers for Jagaban, noting that his leadership style and vision align with their aspirations. Many described him as a leader who listens and acts, unlike others who overlook the contribution of women in the development of Sierra Leone.
Community leaders present at the event praised the initiative, emphasizing that market women have long been the engine of local commerce. They stressed that empowering them will not only improve livelihoods but also contribute to national development.
Political observers noted that the donation adds to Jagaban’s reputation as a compassionate leader with grassroots appeal. His consistent focus on women and youth empowerment has been recognized as a defining feature of his political journey.
In closing his remarks, Jagaban reassured the women that his vision goes beyond temporary assistance. “This is not just about today,” he said. “It is about building a future where our women are strong, self-reliant, and respected contributors to our nation’s growth.”
The event ended with prayers, songs, and a renewed sense of optimism among Abacha Market women, who hailed Jagaban as a true friend and leader of the people.
