The Ministry of Information and Civic Education is set to take its flagship Civic Day Series to Karene District on the 13th and 14th of April 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen citizen engagement and promote inclusive governance across the country.

The two-day engagement will bring together government ministries, departments, and agencies to interact directly with residents, providing updates on national development, policies, and key government interventions.

The Civic Day Series is designed to bridge the gap between government and citizens, creating a platform for dialogue, transparency, and accountability. It also allows citizens to better understand the work of government institutions, their achievements, challenges, and future plans.

The first day of the event will focus on youth participation, featuring an inter-school quiz and debate competition among junior and senior secondary schools in the district.

Students will engage in discussions on key civic topics, including the history of Sierra Leone, governance, education, constitutional review, census, revenue generation, agriculture, and national development.

The initiative aims to promote civic awareness, critical thinking, and active citizenship among young people, empowering them to become informed participants in national affairs.

The second day will feature a Civic Town Hall, bringing together senior government officials, including ministers and heads of agencies, for interactive panel discussions with the people of Karene District.

The town hall is expected to attract a wide range of stakeholders, including paramount chiefs, local council authorities, civil society organizations, youth groups, traders, and community members.

Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, raise concerns, and engage directly with government representatives on issues affecting their communities. The forum will also provide a platform for government to clarify policies, address misconceptions, and gather feedback from citizens.

The Civic Day Series continues to serve as a vital tool in promoting participatory governance, particularly in rural communities. By taking governance closer to the people, the Ministry aims to strengthen trust, improve service delivery, and ensure that citizens are actively involved in national development.

As Karene District prepares to host the upcoming engagement, expectations are high for meaningful dialogue, youth empowerment, and strengthened collaboration between government and the people.

The initiative reaffirms government’s commitment to building an informed, engaged, and empowered citizenry across Sierra Leone.
